Staircase

The Staircase is a self-supporting spiral I designed. The stone is from near my Fathers home town - Monte di Calvene, (near Asiago) in the Italian Alps. The original town was called murari (roughly wall makers); they were the quarries for much of the stone used in Venice and surrounding areas. This is the pink and white checquer pattern you see on many floors of the churches and villas of Venice, Padua, Verona etc. (The Travertine used on the outside of buildings in Venice is from Travertino, Istria - across the Adriatic; the people there speak the same dialect as the people from Monte!) These late Jurassic rock formations are amoung the most studied in the world. (Try a search of ammonitico Rosso Jurassic). Next to the town is a rift - one side is siliceous red limestone whilst on the other side is the younger calcareous limestone. This shift in sedimentation is due to a major shift in climatic and oceanic conditions.

The ceiling is Gosford sandstone (and not wood as many people think)

The floor design is a chain-link pattern that I have translated onto a traditional pattern of two intersecting spirals. The chain is absolute black granite, while the spaces in between are various gemstones I have collected over the years.
